Last year, the National Health Insurance Corporation (NHIC) spent 85.7 billion won treating the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a 86.7 percent rise from 46.7 billion won in 2003.

235,000 people had their COPD treatment covered by their health insurance last year. Men exceeded women at 142,000 to 93,000.
